Acne Rosacea is an acne like condition that appears one the lower part of the face. It affects both men and women and is a condition usually experienced by adults, unlike acne which is often more prevalent during the teen years. It often first appears during middle age and affects those with light skin more often. It tends to be more common in women but men who have it may have a more severe case. Rosacea is caused by blood vessels that dilate and become visible through the skin, thus giving a red appearance similar to acne. While Rosacea does appear to be acne, whiteheads and blackheads, seen with acne, are not present in Rosacea. The exact cause of Rosacea is unknown. Some possibilities of cause are stress, anxiety, and fear. Rosacea is most common is those individuals that blush easily and occurs on the same areas of the face as the areas that become red when blushing.
Rosacea will not improve unless treated and may last for years. It can also effect the eyes causing a stinging and irritation similar to conjunctivitis. This condition can eventually damage the cornea if left untreated. There is no cure for Rosacea but there are treatment options.
The treatments commonly used for acne are not usually recommended for Rosacea. Oral medications as well as tropical ones are often used for treatment. Oral antibiotics are generally prescribed. Redness and inflammation is treated with an antibiotic cream.
Exposure to sun aggravates the condition and should be avoided. A strong sunscreen should be worn if going outdoors. Other factors that may have a adverse effect on the condition are smoking, extreme temperature changes and flushing. Those should also be avoided as much as possible.
Sufferers of Rosacea should try to avoid rubbing their skin and should be very careful in their selection of soaps, cleaners, lotions and hair products that come in contact with their skin as these may further irritate the condition.
Some studies have suggested that a vegan diet may help Rosacea but this has not been proven. Herbs, such as burdock and red clover have also been studies and may be helpful for the conditions but again results are inconclusive.
A cover up make up might make those with Rosacea feel less self conscious but they should be sure to use a product recommended by a physician or check with their physician in regard to any make up being considered before using it to be sure that the ingredients will not make the condition worse.
